Franklin Elementary Points of Pride
The Publishing Center continues to serve Franklin Elementary School students. The center is a facility which is available to students for publishing their work. It contains an i-Mac computer with scanner capabilities and printer, as well as other binding and printing supplies. The Publishing Center is operated by school staff and parent volunteers.
Franklin Elementary PTC/Family Nights are offered during three activity nights during the school year for families. They are centered around the curriculum areas of reading, writing, and math. Each night features connections to the real world through speakers and community business participating. Families are treated to theme-related refreshments and giveaways.
Special education programs are available for students with special needs. The Resource Program offers students with greater needs the opportunity to spend part of the day in a classroom setting with fewer students where they receive small group instruction in reading, writing, and math.
A representative group of parents, teachers, and interested community members volunteer a tremendous amount of time and energy to help make Franklin Elementary the best that it can be for our children. This supportive group sponsors a variety of activities to provide extra materials for the classrooms and playground and funded special assemblies
Franklin’s Literacy Partners represents a short-term intervention program for first grade students working below grade level in reading. It enables these initially at-risk students to make accelerated progress and to become increasingly competent independent readers during approximately 12 to 20 weeks of daily individual 30-minute lesions. The lessons are conducted on a one-to-two basis and are tailored to the needs of each child.
A Feather In Your Cap is a school-wide strategy to encourage students to use their best effort on school assignments. Each week students are chosen from each classroom/grade level as having terrific work. Students share why they were chosen during our Little O News Show and receive a book as a prize. Work samples are posted each week on the “Feather In Your Cap Bulletin Board”.
Our staff includes a special position funded through state aid at-risk money to help bridge the gap between home and school, building links to both our school and other community agencies. Small educational groups study areas such as, anger management, divorce, friendship, social skills and self-esteem.
Franklin School conducts Little O SOAR groups to start each day. During SOAR group time students meet with their SOAR group leader for approximately 20 minutes in groups of 12-16 students (mixed grade levels). The main purpose of this time is for students to make meaningful connections with a special adult and students across grade levels as well as to work on social skills such as empathy, friendship, caring, etc. Ask your child about their SOAR group time!
Little O News Show is broadcast every Friday morning. During our show, which is coordinated by Emily Kanine our art teacher, students present current school news, sing our school song and share their "Feather In Your Cap" work. A DVD of each show is made available to parents for checkout in our school library.
Read Naturally is a computer program led by school staff that is available for students to improve reading fluency and comprehension skills.
Accelerated Reader is a computer program that allows students to check their reading comprehension independently by answering questions about the books they have read.
Math Lab is a program designed to help children achieve success in math. Math Lab works to promote curriculum goals for Kindergarten students in the small group setting. Skills are taught through games and other fun activities.
Franklin's Title-I Program provides supplementary instruction to first and second grade students who are at risk of failing to meet district core academic curriculum standards in reading. Small groups of students meet daily for thirty minutes of targeted instruction in reading strategies to build independent, life-long readers. Support for parents encouraging their young readers is provided as we work together toward student success in the area of reading.
