US News and World Report Best High Schools 2008

Ludington Area Schools has earned a bronze medal indicating we are performing in the top 8% of high schools in the country. Schools selected for these awards must have student test scores that are much above what is expected according to economic and social indicators. These are called “outperforming” schools. LAS has been an outperforming school for many years. Read more here.

Adequate Yearly Progress
The State of Michigan measures each school's Adequate Yearly Progress in many ways as you will see in the accompanying information. We are very proud of our students' success and that we continue to be an "Outperforming School District". See AYP targets here.

Michigan Educational Assessment Program Testing
Our community has high standards for our schools, which we proudly strive to meet. Our students regularly score among the best in the State on the MEAP test. The test is administered to third through ninth graders in the fall of each year. English Language Arts and Mathematics are tested at third through eighth grades, Science at fifth and eighth grades, and Social Studies at sixth and ninth grades. For last year's results and information about Adequate Yearly Progress, please click here.

Michigan Merit Examination / ACT Scores
As a result of the efforts of our students, parents, and teachers, and because the community of Ludington has high expectations and supports its school district, these test scores which reflect the academic preparation of high school students, are outstanding. Our students are well prepared for continued education or the world of work. Our teachers spend nine full days each school year specifically set aside to make curricular adjustments and to share lessons that work. See MME scores here.

Drug Free School Zones
The City of Ludington Department of Public Safety has clearly defined all of the Drug Free / Safety Initiative School Zones. For a map of these areas click here.

Fine Arts
The community of Ludington truly supports all the arts and so does its school district.  All students recieve art, music, and physical education instruction beginning in Kindergarten. We are proud of our Concert Bands and Choirs which routinely earn the highest possible marks in state competition.  LHS is equally proud of its Jazz Band which also earns high marks and was the State Champion in 2006.  For more information on the band program, click here.

Professional Learning Communities Days
Our staff is very dedicated to their profession of teaching, learning, and curriculum development. We are proud that our staff requested one full day per month for the sole purpose of studying Michigan curriculum, studying the data that drives our changes, making adjustments, sharing best practice lesson plans, and to determine what data is needed to raise the bar to Soar Higher yet. We are proud that our community values our efforts to be the best and supports these teacher work days.
